Information for guests

We supply our guests with information on all the most interesting places to visit on Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Booklets, maps and other information can be found in the hotel’s reception or in the rooms.

Glacier tours

We book tours to the top of Snaefellsjokull Glacier on snowmobiles (1-2 persons) or snowcats (up to 16 persons). Tours run every day, weather permitting. It only takes about 10-15 min. to drive from Hotel Hellnar up to the departure depot for the tours. Please note that the tours have only been running till the last part of July due to climate change.

From the glacier there is a vast and incredible panorama: Hellissandur, Rif, the wide bay Breidafjordur, and as far as the West fjords (Latrabjarg cliffs). The mountain's rugged terrain is also impressive, as is the view south encompassing all of the gulf of Faxafloa, to Reykjavik and even beyond to Keflavik. These are always fascinating excursions, but it is important for travelers to realize that views from the glacier are naturally dependent upon local weather conditions at the given moment.

Hiking trails at Hellnar

Hotel Hellnar offers a map of hiking trails around the hotel. The most popular trail runs from Hellnar to Arnarstapi. The major attractions at Hellnar such as Bardarlaug crater, Laugarbrekka the birthplace of Gudridur Thorbjarnardottir and Mary’s Spring are marked on the map.

The Strand
The strand between Arnarstapi and Hellnar is of dramatic rugged cliffs. It is fascinating to see how the different forces of nature have shaped this area through the ages.

Laugarbrekka
It is possible to walk to the ancient regional meeting place and explore the ruins of the farmstead Laugarbrekka, birthplace of Gudrun Thorbjarnardottir. At Laugarbrekka is the grave of Axlar-Bjorn and highest on the hillock is the pool of Bardur Snaefellsas.

Just to the west is Laugarvatn where "some" see dancing elves and hidden people. From there it is possible to follow the road back to Arnarstapi or go lower along the Hellnahraun lava flow to the Mariulind springs and onwards along the "Midgatan" way through the lava area (along the electric power line) to Arnarstapi

Mt. Stapafell / Cave Songhellir
One can also hike a ring around Stapafell mountain, stopping at Songhellir cave. It is likewise possible to go to the top of Stapafell, which is about 526 meters (about 1,700 feet).

Hike on the Glacier
A hike on the glacier Snaefellsjokull can be treacherous for anyone. It is best to follow routes established for the snowmobiles and snow cats.

Snaefellsjokull National Park

The Visitor Centre of Snaefellsjokull National Park is right next door to Hotel Hellnar at Hellnar. The centre offers education on the park’s animal life, the flora and the many volcanoes and eruptions that have taken place through the centuries. The entrance to the National Park is only 10 min. driving distance from Hotel Hellnar.

Horse-riding

We book horse-riding tours that run through lava-fields or along sandy beaches, either on the south or north part of the Peninsula. The horse-rentals are about 20 min. driving distance from Hotel Hellnar.
