Activities – at the heart of the Glacier

Glacier tours – We book tours to the top of Snaefellsjokull Glacier on snowmobiles (1-2 persons) or snowcats (up to 16 persons). Tours run every day, weather permitting, from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m. It only takes about 10-15 min. to drive from Hotel Hellnar up to the departure depot for the tours. Please note that the tours have only been running till the last part of July due to climate change.

Horse-riding– We book horse-riding tours that run through lava-fields or along sandy beaches, either on the south or north part of the Peninsula. The horse-rentals are about 20 min. driving distance from Hotel Hellnar.

Island Tours from Stykkisholmur – We book Island Tours from Stykkisholmur. Departures 2-3 times daily. The boat sails past beautiful and majestic islands, where birds like puffins, cormorants, kitti-wakes and seaeagles nest. It takes about an hour to drive from Hotel Hellnar to Stykkisholmur.

Snaefellsjokull National Park – The Visitor Centre of Snaefellsjokull National Park is right next door to Hotel Hellnar at Hellnar. The centre offers education on the park’s animal life, the flora and the many volcanoes and eruptions that have taken place through the centuries. The entrance to the National Park is only 10 min. driving distance from Hotel Hellnar.

Hiking trails at Hellnar – Hotel Hellnar offers a map of hiking trails around the hotel. The most popular trail runs from Hellnar to Arnarstapi. The major attractions at Hellnar such as Bardarlaug crater, Laugarbrekka the birthplace of Gudridur Thorbjarnardottir and Mary’s Spring are marked on the map.

Museums on Snaefellsnes Peninsula – One can find several museums and heritage centres on Snaefellsnes Peninsula. At Hellissandur is a heritage centre for seamen at Sjominjasafn.
