Hotel Hellnar - Environmental Policy

Hotel Hellnar is the first travel and tourism business in Iceland to be certified by GREEN GLOBE, and has been certified since 2002. Hotel Hellnar is committed to providing quality service in a safe, ecological environment where care has been taken to use natural building materials, and adhere to ecological building standards. We invite and encourage our guests to participate in our efforts to protect the environment, by providing information about our business and pointing out to them how they can support our policy. We have been certified by GREEN GLOBE since 2002, and continue to seek annually re-certification. This measure shows our commitment to the environment and also ensures the customer that we are acting in accordance with our policy.

Green Glove Certified 2010

Our commitment is to :

• Achieve sound environmental practices across our entire operation.
• Comply fully with all environmental legislation.
• Reduce pollution and waste by reusing, recycling, saving energy and water, and using eco-labeled products.
• Make year-on-year improvements in all the GREEN GLOBE Key Performance Areas.
• Ensure, where ever possible, that all new products or materials used around the Hotel are natural based, eco-labeled or have a certificate of origin, so that the impact of their use is minimal or non-existent.
• Where ever we can, to work with others in the tourism industry, in public associations, with local and national governments, and the community in general, to achieve wider environmental awareness.
• Provide all employees with the training and resources required to meet our objectives.
• Continually seek more information on sustainable development in general and pass that information on to employees, guests and others.
• Openly communicate our policies and practices to guests and other interested parties.
• Use locally produced goods when available.
• Employ local people or people from areas where there is unemployment.
• Review operations constantly to ensure that best practice is maintained in all aspects of operations at all time.
• Review the Environmental Policy annually.
• Minimize risk of emergency situations by a maintenance program and by exercising guidelines in handling such situations should they arrive.

Green Globe

Green Globe is the global Benchmarking, Certification and improvement system assisting the international travel and tourism industry to attain sustainability. Green Globe provides a certification system that responds directly to the major environmental problems facing the planet, including the greenhouse effect, overuse of freshwater resources, destruction of biodiversity, production of solid and biological waste and social issues.

Benchmarking and certification by Green Globe has to be carried out annually. When Hotel Hellnar had achieved Benchmarking status in 2004 Cathy Parsons, Global Manager of Green Globe, had this to say. “I am delighted that Hotel Hellnar has achieved Benchmarked status. Hotel Hellnar is an inspiration to all those people committed to environmentally sustainable tourism. They have demonstrated through a variety of initiatives, that the business and its employees can make a difference to reducing their environmental impact. The commitment they have shown in signing up to participate in the Green Globe program and their achievements set an example for other businesses to follow.

Those who seek certification from GREEN GLOBE go through three stages:

A – Affiliate:
Green Globe has an Affiliate program which provides sustainability information and helps Communities to understand how Green Globe Benchmarking and Certification works and how to achieve this status.

B – Benchmarking:

Companies may undertake Benchmarking independently of full Certification. Companies that have been successfully Benchmarked may use the Green Globe logo to promote their environmental and social achievements.

C – Certified:

Companies that satisfy all of the requirements of the Green Globe COMPANY STANDARD and who are successfully certified following an on-site visit by an accredited third-party assessor are entitled to use the Green Globe logo with distinctive tick.
